I have a metal outdoor umbrella stand and I noticed that most of the holes you use to adjust the height of the umbrella were covered in what looks like dirt; however, I then noticed wasps around.
Although I haven't seen any fly in or out of any holes that are still open, I have a feeling they're in there & that what I thought was dirt was is somehow part of their nest.
I was thinking of throwing the whole thing out, somehow, but it's a huge & heavy offset umbrella stand(w/a water filled base)that I'd have to take apart in order to do so, so I'd rather just keep it & get rid of the wasps. Plus it wasn't inexpensive
If you dont see wasps attending to the mud, they may not have anything to do with the umbrella. I am fixing some screens on my house, and when I went to put back some I noticed in the holes the screen pegs fit into had mud in them. I only had the screens out for a week. I dug out the mud and found larvae of some kind inside, like 5 white wormy things in less than a 1/4" space. Don't know if its moth or mud dauber wasps or what but they are gone now. Otherwise, if you hate stinging insects and want em gone, kill em with spray. I don't like that, but what else can you do?
You've got mud dauber related wasps. The holes have been taken and made into brood chambers. Once the food insect is installed in the hole with an egg laid on it the mother wasp seals the hole and forgets about it. The only time Ivee been stung by a mud dauber wasp, I was holding it in my hand. That's something I won't repeat but that's what it took before that kind of wasp would sting. I actually didn't pick up the wasp. It was in a hole in a piece of wood that I picked up. The wasp came out of the hole and felt trapped by my hand over the hole. Paper wasps and yellow jackets are an entirely different breed. They sting for the fun and exercise.

Mud daubers are good predators in the garden. They pollinate flowers and are great to have around if you don't like spiders. They paralyze the spider and put one in each chamber to feed their young. http://www.pollinator.com/beneficials/trypaxylon_politum.htm

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
