Hello, I have a wooden swingset that is about 5-7 years old, I ned to paint it with something that will weather well, is safe for kids and will help somewhat smooth out the small splits in the wood. That's not too much too ask is it? and If it ciould apply itself and be free that would be good to! Also if anyone has any ideas about the best deal on what to put on the ground, to protect the falling kids noodles. Thanks for the help!
Cabot's decking stain is the best choice for swingset restains, IMHO. Restaining a swingset can be very labor intensive. Cabot's will give you performance and good appearance for 3 years easy - may even be able to stretch it out to 5 if you do a good job.
Prep properly, use a good brush and two coats are a must if you expect any durability and logevity.
Cabot's is available at most Lowe's and they do have $5 sample cans so you can test your stain color before you buy gallons.
Never ever paint pressure treated wood. It's just going to peel off in no time. Use a quality stain instead. Soild stains can be mixed in any color that paint can be mixed in and a solid stain last far longer then tranparent. There's nothing you can or should do about the "splitting". It's called checking and all pressure treated wood does it. Filling the splits will do nothing more then act as a splitting wedge. Someones going to suggest caulking them to fill them but as the wood swells it just going to push it out and make humps.
