I am going to paint my house. It has been painted with oil based paint. The last paint job was 7 years ago. Most of the paint is in good condition. I have started scraping and repairing the bad areas. I know the bare wood needs a good coat of primer. I am using bulls eye 123 wich is a latex. You can put a oil based paint over it. I would like to know, do you need to put a primer over good oil based paint if you are going to repaint with oil based paint. The original paint is Sherman Williams. I am going to use the same brand paint. Thanks to all that reply. EdwardL57
My mom recently bought paint to re-do her kitchen, which had not been painted in many years, and she had no idea what type of paint it had on it. They told her at the paint store that if she primed it, it would not matter what type of paint was already there, it would work no matter what. I primed it (I am her painter) and did the paint job over it and it looks fabulous. No problems so far.
I feel checking with your local Sherwin Williams store is a good idea too. Each region of the country has different weather conditions, and certain primers may hold up better than others. They may know what works best in your area.
I'm kind of old fashioned, as I feel an oil base primer over bare exterior wood (either new or sanded/scraped bare areas) is superior to a waterbase primer on this surface, in the long run. (at least in our climate) And you can still paint over oil base primer with latex paint. I think when painting over a clean painted surface with the same type of paint, a primer in between is not necessary.
PS:I LOVE Zinsser 1 2 3, for any interior or furniture priming.
