We are adding a portico to our front entry. We want it open so we can install a ceiling fan/light combo. We don't want the typical ceiling. I would like beams and a nice wood so the view from inside is pretty.
The plan is to stucco the house and have stone veneer (or similar) columns. What wood would you recommend for the interior?
I live in AZ so rot, mold etc. is not an issue. Just endless heat and sun.
But we are thankful today for two whole days of rain after none for 92 days.
I've always liked the look of a 6" T&G ceiling. Your only weathering problem will be shrinkage from the wood drying out over time, so I'd look for a low moisture content wood - maybe fir or spruce if it's available where you live. Redwood would also work, but we don't have too much experience with it here in the East since it's so pricey.
I think that anything that you put up will eventually shrink a bit due to the dry conditions, but if you start with a dry and stable wood it should shrink evenly and just make for a slight opening of space between the T&G. If you finish with a clear coat, this will likely not be noticed.
