We are looking into replacing our front door. I was wondering if there was a way to stain or paint a steel door to look like it is a wood door? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

You can get a graining tool and a couple different shades of brown/black paint. I have seen the end results a couple of times but never really tried it myself. Might post in the decorating section as I am sure someone there has tried or will tell you how.

if you're looking to replace your door then just replace it with a wood grained fiberglass door. Almost everyone has an option now for the wood grain from Oak, Mahogany, Fir etc.... May cost slightly more than steel but how much will you pay for a steel door to be painted to LOOK like wood, only to have it need repainted in a few years.

I tried those graining tools, never could get the sucker to work right and look like wood grain... sheesh!

But then again, thats what veneer is for, aint it? Smile

May the LORD be with you.

I wish you well...

Where I am in Alberta, there was a company that did this very thing. Just a local outfit. not sure if they did other things, i assume they had to. I think it was about $200 to do a door and the pics of their finished product were really nice.

My parents recently replaced their front door with an Oak grain fiberglass door. The jambs were primed pine and my father wanted the jambs to match the oak grain door. He hired a painter to do the wood-graining. It looks amazing. It didn't cost very much ($150). A new wood grain fiberglass door will run you quite a bit. I just replaced my door with a cherry mahogany grained door and it cost me almost $4000. Had I not had so many issues with my old steel front door, I would have tried the wood gaining also. Only difficult part would have been the areas around the sidelites.
