I am looking to add a shed to my backyard. I have not determined the size yet. Something to hold 4 bikes, lawn-mower, and stackable patio chairs. What kind of foundation and prep is required before getting the shed and any recommendations on brands? I have not ruled out making it myself, just didn't find any designed I liked so far.

My backyard is roughly 20x35ft, very small, so I don't want a massive shed to dominate the backyard.

To determine size, take a look at sheds at places like Lowe's or Home Depot. Walk inside and block out where you'd put your stuff. Then plan on a shed that is at least 1-1/2 times the size. Really. You'll get more stuff, or it will not always be stored perfectly.

With such a small yard your shed size is limited. Maybe your budget will also be a good guide. I'd give serious consideration to the pre-made sheds available. I've often wondered how they can be sold at the prices they are since the material cost alone is close the the cost of the shed. Also look for deals at home shows or consider used from Craigs List.

By far the best foundation is a concrete slab just above grade level. If not that then a metal frame with plywood is available for most sheds, or a full pressure treated frame and plywood floor. Downside to the framed versions is that you usually need some form of ramp to get int the doorway.

Whatever shed you pick it will need to be up off the ground at least 6" if not the sides will rot.

May want to check and see if you need a permit for this and check into any needed set backs.
Even a store shed in some areas will need a permit,
