I will be replacing my old wood railing on my 2nd story deck soon. I plan to use black round metal balusters. Is there a standard space between them that should be used?

        No more than 4" spacing.

The basic rule is that you cannot have any opening where you can pass a 4" sphere through. Because of slight variances in material, go for a max of 3-7/8" space between each baluster.

If there is a bottom space, it can vary by locality. Certainly not more than 4" but our local code department wants any bottom space to be less than 2-1/4" so as to keep a can from rolling off the edge.
