I am considering creating a 10’ x 16’ patio in my backyard using the Quickrete Walkmaker form, however I had a couple questions and also wanted to post and see if anyone else had used this product and what their experience was. The patio will be set directly off a wood deck. The instructions for the walkmaker do not really mention building a base for the walkway/patio that you are creating, they only say that “for professional results remove 1 inch of soil” and that the ground should be “reasonably level”. They state that because of the way the mold is made, the concrete can conform to the existing surface, resulting in “very little” surface preparation being necessary.
I’ve never done a project like this, however I would think that you would at least have to have an inch or two of sand underneath for drainage correct? Also, as this is going to butt up against my deck (the deck is built right off the ground, about 6 inches) which ends approx. 10 ft from the back of the house, would I need to still slope the patio away from the house? Also, I was planning on using the regular Quikcrete mix, however the climate I live in has both pretty hot summers and pretty cold winters, should I use the crack resistant product instead?
Any input is appreciated, thanks.
