I had new roof shingles put on the little stoop over my door in my house. First is there a way to get just a couple ridge caps so I don't have to buy a whole box of them, and second, there is about an inch or two space left from where the old shingles where up against the original siding of the house, evidently there was more than one layer there. But can this space be filled with just calking? Or do I have to get something else to fill the space? Thanks alot!

You can make ridge caps from regular shingles. There should be flashing against the house. The shingles should be layed on top of the flashing against the house. The flashing protects the siding from water penetration. If it were just a stoop the old shingles should have been removed before appling the new shingles.

thanks Redover, I kinda thought they could make ridge caps with the shingles left over, and yes, all the old shingles were taken off first, and I also thought flashing should have been used to protect the house, don't know why they didn;t use it..do u think its too late now to put it on? thanks alot for ur answer!

Hard to know what they did without a picture.
There was suppost to be step flashing up under the siding and over the shingles at the tops of them so it does not show.

The flashing to work properly needs to be installed before the shingles. There is no way to do it "after the fact". This is a step that most roofers do not forget. If they didn't use it I would make them come back and do it right. If it is not flashed it could cause damage to the house if water penetrates the siding and runs into the wall cavaity.
