charred wood inside vinyl deck? help!
I have a small deck off the second story that covers the front porch that is rotting inside the vinyl covering. Upon dismantle it looks like previous owner extended the deck about 1 foot all the way around. What appears to be the original deck substructure is all charred. Just blackened, no deep burns. I had heard that part of the house had burnt, but not the porch. Don't know if they re used wood or if the charting was intentional as a treatment. It still seems very sturdy while the newer wood is rotted and appeared to have been devoured by termites. Not sure if I should leave the charred boards or start from scratch... Any help is greatly appreciated and I can have pictures posted as soon as I figure out how to.

If it were mine I would start from scratch and not try to piece the new with the old.

To post photos, try these options:

1. Check Simply_Me's good instructions in "The porch that went bad" post under Outdoor Projects in the Home Improvement Section":

2. Or Click on Tools below the DIY Message Boards toolbar, then click Help, then "How to Post Photos."

If the wood is discovered to be surface charred, then I would reuse it with confidence. Charred wood is actually very structurally strong, less likely to burn, plus termite and rot resistant.
