hi everyone, i have very old basement windows. the house is a cape cod and it is about 35 to 40 yrs old. my son bought me anderson replacement windows with the screens and everything the problem is i don't know how to go about getting the old stuff out and put the new ones in. the old ones are that aluminum and the screens are all ripped. they are horrible. my son is 28 and i am 48 so we have to do this ourselves since we can't afford a contractor to do this. i hope we can get this done between the 2 of us and some big help from you all out there. thanks tray
tray, Installing new basement windows in not the most difficult job you'll do but it really has to be done right to avoid problems. Hopefully the windows that your son bought are the right size for the opening that you have, if not then you'll need to get the right size. Since Anderson windows are usually new construction windows you basically want to remove everything that is there with a reciprocating saw and pry bars down to the rough opening. If there is a wooden frame you want to leave that so you have something to attach the nailing flange to (if your windows have a nailing flange). If it doesn't have a wooden frame then you'll want to install one the proper size for the windows you have. You only want to work on one window at a time just incase you run into any problems and each window will help you do the next one quicker and more precise (learn as you go).
Rather then explain how to install an Anderson window since I don't know which one you have or your specific situation, this link http://www.andersenwindows.com/servlet/Satellite/window...ndow-replacement.htm from their site will give you step by step instructions. Anderson is one of the top window manufacturers, so if the windows are installed properly you should get many years of use from them with little to no problems. The key to this is installing them properly, so follow all the instructions and if you do run into any problems stop and call Anderson. Their technical service people have probably dealt with any situation you will come across and can advise you of the proper way to eliminate the problem so you don't have any problems later or invalidate your warrantee.
But this is just my opinion, I hope it helps.
