My husband built a beautiful white pergola with a clear corregated cover roof so we can enjoy the light and stay out of the rain under cover. Our problem is the corregated polycarbon sheets used for the roofing get very dirty and continually need cleaning. He is now too old to do this cleaning himself. I am looking for suggestions for roofing that can replace the polycarbon sheets, allow light through and protect us from the rain and not need continual cleaning.Any suggestions? Sue

Hello,

We are in the process of putting up a Pergola. I am going to put screen that is used for windows on top and use vinyl lattice on top of that. I know that some light rain will get thru but not enough to matter and the cleaning well I don't think it will be that bad. A hose should do the job.

Just a suggestion.

Snuss, do a google Image search with terms like:
telescoping water wand
telescoping hose wand
gutter hose wand

to see if any of those would be helpful.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Without a slope to the roof anything you put up there is going to stay dirty. The moisture and dirt get a chance to sit there and form mold.
If you try to clean it with bleach the bleach will start to remove the finish on the deck and make it start to rot.
If you do as tear368 suggested the screening will sag betreen the joist and catch every leaf and any flying dust causing the screen to sag even more and would be next to impossible to clean.

I am familar with a product that is very similar to the pergola that you were discussing about. The only difference is that the louvers on the patio cover can open and close and it is made from aluminum. Its called Solara Adjustable Patio Cover. From my expierience wood rots within a few years and it is a pain in the @@@ to clean. Aluminum is the best material that will last and will be the easiest to clean.

Just a response to the screen and lattice on top of the Pergola. My dad (bless him) put this ontop about 10 years ago and it looks just as good today as it did when he put it up. My family home is in Virginia Beach, VA area. But as I stated it was just a suggestion. This is what I am going to do. Thank God for all the advise that is out there. It's nice having the pro's to help. I sure have learned alot from their advise. Thanks everyone......
