Catio
I want to build what's called a "Catio" on or connected to an existing covered porch. Does anyone have any tips? The floor is concrete, the top is wood, and there are a couple of supporting columns that are wood. It has to have a door because the patio is where the front door of the house is located. Thanks

Here are pictures of my "Cat Parlor" that I built using my formal livingroom. Towards the bottom of that page and continued on page 3 are pictures of my "Catio" which is 10' x 20' and it includes a Cat Wheel for the kids to play on.

My PhotoBucket

I own 8 Bengal cats, 3 of which are First Generation meaning they are half Asian Leopard Cat (a wild cat) and half Bengal.

In the Cat Parlor, the walls are covered in FRP and there is vinyl flooring going up the wall behind the FRP to protect from any "accidents".

They have access to the Catio from the Parlor using the window with a customized cat door and tunnel going to the Catio.

Here is a another good site for catio info:

I hope you do not get arrested for running a cat house.

Scott, WOW! What a great playspace for cats! Did you also construct the exterior catio shown in later photos (photos 107, 108 and more)? Is this connected to the indoor catio by what appears to be a cat run, so the cats can go in and out as they please?

And just out of curiosity, did you have to have a special kind of building permit to construct this attachment to the house?

In Photo 95, what type of patio stone did you use for the outdoor patio? I've never seen stone so large and with such a lovely color. It's beautiful - makes me think you live in the SW someplace (not prying, just wondered).

Thanks for sharing these photos of some very striking and exotic cats.

Joe, thanks for the cat humor! Made my day.

Joe if I had a dollar for ever time I've heard that....LOL

Thanks GardenSprite, I love my cats.

Yes I built the outdoor Catio. It is free standing and not really attached to the house except for a small tunnel that the cats use to get to the catio from the indoor room.

I live in Southern California and in my community no permits were required since it isn't actually attached to the house (except for the small tunnel). They treated it like a gazebo or shed.

Yes the cats have access as they please. They love it and I love having them in their own area that is safe and secure.

The patio is actually stamped concrete. There are a couple of drains installed in that area so that I can hose it down and have the water drain out to the front yard.
