Wood post and board retaining wall on slope Sign In/Join

I want to install a 24" high timber retaining wall using posts every 4' and attach 2x12 boards to outside of posts with carriage bolts. My question is...are the boards sufficient to hold the weight without bowing or other problems? The wall is at the top of the slope and it's purpose is to give me a level space for a 3' wide walkway. I am thinking of using 4x6 posts to a depth of 24" in ground and 24" above ground. If the 2x12 boards are not sufficient, what should I use? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Here is an article on building a retaining wall not out of large timbers. It would be worth your time to read this.

With respect to bolting the 2x12's to the face of your posts so you have a smooth face, I'd opt to put them behind the posts to the dirt pushes them into the post instead of relying on bolts to hold it to the post. Also through bolts with washers on both ends would be better than carriage bolts.

I read the article but it seems too complicated for my limited skill set. I do intend to put the boards behind the posts but I am still not sure whether the 2x12 board will suffice and hold the load. Bolts and washers sound like a better option. This is only a 2' high retaining wall but will this work?
