I have a badly cracked plaster ceiling that had been covered for many years by a drop ceiling. We took down the ceiling to gain a foot of height.is it ok to cover plaster with drywall? Not sure how fix my mess in a cost effective way. Any advice would be greartly appreciated.

You need to remove any loose plaster and cut out any that is hanging below the rest. Or, add some furring strips so that you have a consistently level surface to install drywall.

Once you have a level surface to install new drywall, you can do this to cover up all the old plaster.
