        Hey, the wife and I are thinking about painting or staining our cabinets in our house. Here is a picture of what we have in our house, wondering what type of wood it is? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        looks like plain sawn oak, probably a veneer. Be careful if you sand it if it is a veneer, you can sand right through it and ruin the surface
        Stain or paint ? Your choice.Of course if you sand through the veneer, you'll have to paint

        And be aware that oak doesn't paint very well. Not the the paint will not stick, but rather you will continue to see the differences in the two grain patterns in the oak surface.
