In general, how many coats of sealer are needed to "finish" a staining project. The wood is already stained and I am just not sure if 2 or 3 coats of sealer are applied following the staining. I know about the sanding in between coats and am just wondering how many coats it usually takes to finish trim and cabinets?

Hi Joel,

It usually takes 3 or 4 coats of polyurethane to seal the wood. Whether you use 3 or 4 coats depends a bit on the use the piece is expected to have. The more use the more coats for protection and longer life.

Good Luck!
