My heat pump has a filter with the mechanical equipment in my basement. Upstairs in the house is a large air return vent. No air comes out of it. It has no filter in it. Is a filter needed at this air intake or is the filter underneath the house all that is needed.

YOU SHOULD ONLY NEED 1 FILTER ON THE RETURN SIDE OF YOUR UNIT, IF THE FILTER YOU HAVE NOW IS ON THE RETURN SIDE, YOUR GOOD TO GO

the standard filters provided in heating systems only protect the motor from excess crud clogging it up.

if you want additional protection, go to an allergy-grade replacement filter. lots of companies now make these.

in either event, adding remote filters to return ducts does nothing except trap lint in front of the filter in the room, and unbalances the heat distribution. stick with the central unit only.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?

only one filter is needed near the a/c intake to filter the home. However if you have health troubles it can help to put a seperate filter to block allergins. Its your game friend, how freaky are you.

I totaly disagree. A filter is needed at the air intake in the room to catch the airborne dust and one is also need built into the air exchanger.
Many times there's more then one intake filter so the cold air get sucked out of the room and replaced with heated air.
If the one in the room is removed all the air ducts will become covered with dust and may form mold and make a great place to bred dust mites.
The one on the air exchanger is to act as a last ditch effert to stop the dust from plugging up the slant or A coil. If it gets plug the unit will freeze up.
Any air exchanger I've ever seen has a narrow pull out filter on it.

Normally on a ducted hvac system, just ONE filter is required. And unless the duct size and layout warrant the addition of two filters, by adding another filter you would cause a few air flow problems to the system *(restricted air flow, causing a higher "heat rise" which is bad for the heat exchanger) Frown
Again, ONE filter, either in the return grille or right at the blower housing is usually sufficient. The one located at the blower housing is best Smile
