Fireplace Tile Surround
I am in the process of redoing my tile fireplace surround. And I am looking for some design and build tips/feedback before I finalize the design.

Although the current mantel/surround is in good shape we really don't like the tiles. If we just replace the tiles, I think there is so little space between the fireplace insert and the mantel to "show off" the new tile. The plan is to remove the mantel legs and tile a wider section on either side of the i.e. tile the same footprint the mantel legs left. Then install a new floating mantel.

I assume I will need to edge the sides with a schluter strip of sorts...how can I make this blend better?

Any tips on attaching mantels?

Here is a before picture, with a picture of the new tile I am considering.

well, blow me down and slap me wit a fender, arf arf... but I kinda like the slate that is on there now with the wall color.

get some art that has that honey-oak floor color on the wall nearby to bring all the colors together. that's what I'd do.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?

It's not slate, it's ceramic 49 cent tiles. You're right though...it doesn't look horrible....we're just wanting to lighten up the tile, and eventually the paint too.
