We are installing new countertops and need to remove the old ones. We thought the countertops were screwed in from the bottom but it looks like they may have been fabricated onsite and maybe plywood has been nailed to the cabinet frames and formica overlayed on top of plywood. What is the best way to remove the existing countertops and not damage the cabinets.

after looking underneath for signs of construction adhesive, cleats with screws and maybe glue, etc. formulate a plan.

in case of cleats of metal or wood, unscrew them, mark position, and save them. if they don't drop off, use a pry bar and a hammer as needed to finish that job.

in case of construction adhesive spills onto the interior of the cabinets, you will have a glued top. going to be tough. try getting out the putty knife with the blade through-handle, and pound on that to separate the pieces.

you are likely to hit either nails or screws if the laminate was applied on site. so move over a little bit and continue removing adhesive bonds.

when done, hammer up from the edges on the countertop and see if any of it moves. if so, you're on the right track, keep at it.

if nails were used, there should be little damage to the cabinets. if screws were used, you might have to do some fixing up before doing the next countertop.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
