So what's up with all the new "members" that are joining just to spam the boards?

        Specifically:
        ellena3321
        dale_eklund
        DabneyWalker

There are a couple over at HGTV as well. Dabney and Dale are dual offenders.

Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.

My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Who knows the whole reason for spammers. Some spam for profit - those embedded links will pay them a few cents if they get clicked on hundreds of times. It may seem like a small amount of money but if you cut and paste onto several hundred message boards it could translate into thousands of hits.

Others are just sad, useless shells of humans. They have a computer and little else. No one cares about them and no one talks to them or pays them any attention because frankly, the spammers have nothing to say and few, if any redeeming qualities. Easy enough to troll on message boards to incite a response. Much like a neglected child who will misbehave to get attention, the loser trolls will post anything that will get somebody to pay attention. It's a cause and effect thing - start a thread and have people respond and you have done something, giving your pitiful life meaning.

Sad, but the truth of it.

Oh gee I'm so upset now, not. LOL
I've never been good at spelling, never will be.
I had a customer make fun of me for misspellings on a $10,000 plus invoice.
I told him it did not cost me a penny to misspell those words but it just cost you $10,000 to do things you did not know how to do.

I'd love to see an FBI profile of these characters. I wouldn't be surprised if they share common characteristics of dysfunctionality, antisocial personalities and anger management issues with the types of people who get ahold of assault rifles and go on rampages. (Maybe sometime Criminal Minds will do an episode on spammers?)

I still think at least some of them are social misfits, or foreign based people with anti-American attitudes. And I would love to see the webmasters of the sites they're copying from go after them for plagiarism. Sue the suckers.

And on the opposite are the survey solicitors - "take this survey and register to win $$$!" or the so-called students who want help with their homework (http://boards.diynetwork.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9221916776/m/2193947767).

        Joe,
If you use Chrome or Firefox they have a built in spell checker.

Firefox will champion your spelling ability for sure. Big Grin I always though this site did a very good job dealing with Spammers. But some will always get through. I also posted on another unnamed site {TOH} but left as moderators claimed to always be working to remove Spammers. Usually the board was 95% Spam at any time, give or take. Don't know if it has changed since, mainly because I have not been back to check...

Both this site and HGTV used to do a much better job of dealing with spammers. Now it seems the sites are on auto-pilot. If the filter doesn't catch your post for a trigger word it typically will stay up for ever, even if you click the little report post icon on the bottom of the post.

At on the HGTV boards in Kitchen and Bathrooms one poster has about half the posts on the first page. Some asking non-sense questions and the others offering unsolicited advice. These types of posts have really picked up over the past two months. I'm suspect now on any first time poster asking a question.

My guess is that this is one of these "SEO" services that is helping the linked sites get rankings by posting articles and then including a link to the site they are promoting. I get offers from these type via (spam) emails all the time. They say "We noticed that your site is not showing up on the first page of searches . . . ". They promise to get you rankings with the use of relevant and unique "content". I have never used one of these services as they are usually underhanded in there methods and could in fact even get your site penalized or removed from the search index. So yes, money is being made - people don't spam for nothing.

Now there's a character pretending to be an honors marketing student, trying to induce responses to an alleged survey with the possibility of winning a limited VISA card for participation.

The posts are in Cool Tools and DIY Redesign.

Oh, and of course he/she wants an e-mail address as part of participation in the survey. I'm sure anyone naive enough to provide it will be inundated with spam e-mails.
