My home has a split A/C system. The condensing unit is outside and the furnace and evap coil is inside the house. The evap coil was replaced on March 2008 with Trane model # 2TXCC049BC3HCAA. I need to replace the condensing unit with a new Trane unit model # 4TRR3048A100A that uses R-410A refrigerant. My existing system uses R-22. My question is: Is it OK to keep the existing evap. coil for R-410A with the new condensing unit? The A/C tech said if adding Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV) to the indoor coil and a suction drier , evacuate the current refrigerant ,clean both coil , the exiting evap.coil will work with r-410A. The other A/C tech told me I need replace existing Evap.coil to matched with condenser. Who is right?
you will need to match the part numbers to a catalog engineering reference to be sure.
but in general, you need a new coil for a higher SEER new internal a/c unit.
you would have to blow out the old oil in any event if you reused the old coil. R12/R22 oil turns to thick goo in a R410 system, starves the compressor of oil, for a prompt and expensive warranty-voiding failure.
I'd replace it, take the old one apart, and recycle the metals.
sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
The evaporator coil and the condensor unit need to be a matched pair to get the full benefit of the new outdoor unit. The tubes can be reused. It would seem that if the heat transfer area is ok the old evaporator would work but there are differences in the details that will be good to include for your new system.
