Depends on the bed and how it is constructed. A wooden braced one may need to be lag bolted to the wall studs. It would have to be VERY stable without the bottom bed in place. You would not want the thing falling down with her in it or a friend or sibling in the room underneath!
You may want to advertise in the newspaper or at a local college for a used loft/study space unit? Seems many of the dorms have them and kids are constantly moving in and out of University/College housing. If you can find a bolt together unit that has supported college kids safely, then you can be pretty sure it will be safe for your daughter?
my sister did this to my neices room. [brother in law did what he was told] he took out the bottom bunk, and instaled aplywood the full length on the back. from the floor to the bottom of the upper bunk. and on a side also. then he installed cork board so she can stick stuff up.they put a desk under it and other stuff. looks good. really opened the look of them room.
