I need to install a water line for new refrig icemaker. I have heard that the saddle valves are not very reliable. What are my alternatives??

Your alternative is cutting into the water line, and putting in a "T", then going off the "T" and putting in a water valve, (the type they use for under bathroom sinks), and running either 3/8th copper or plastic line with a compression fitting at both ends.

I have had a saddle valve on my water line for over 20 years and its held up, never a drop or drip...

May the LORD be with you.

I wish you well...

hey buddy. where is your kitchen sink? can you get a line from the k.s[kitchen sink] to the frig. if ya can , ya can install a compression tee, above the valve [angle stop]under the k.s.
turn off water on valve, disconnect the top nut.that would be the one on the supply line going to the sink. you can buy a 3/8 x 3/8 x 1/4 inch compression tee,you will need a 2inch peice of the supply line between the valve and the tee. cut it off the supply line
now the piping is protected by the angle stop

CoolThanks so much for the info. I am trying to DImyself as a surprise for my husband. The fridge is about 6 ft across the kitchen and I think that it would not be to difficult to attempt myself.

Seems to me that if this water line is in the basement and you have access to it, and can drill up from the basement, it would be a lot easier to do that, instead of running a water line across the floor, or try to hide it someplace behind this and that...

Besides, if your kitchen is directly over the basement, it wouldnt be any trouble at all to drill a small hole in back of the fridge, put a piece of wire down there (coathanger) to locate where the hole is, then you can put your water line closest to the hole and start from there.

Good luck on the DIY, but, if you run into any trouble...make SURE you call some one to help you... TURN OFF THE WATER before you do anything at the meter so that you dont have water gushing everywhere, then tap into the line and install your line, then route it up to the fridge.

Also, if you can, get a wet and dry vac to suck out the water from the line, (that is unless you can tilt it down so that the water can drain, or open your lowest line-->that probably being your basement tub that the laundry drains into and let the water out that way so that there is no water in the lines...you cant soldier any lines with water in it because the water will expand and come out of the lines, and just boil and the pipe wont get hot enough to soldier properly!

May the LORD be with you.

I wish you well...
