Used it for the first time since moving in and the temperature in the house didn't go up even 1 degree in 3 hours. It's a gas fireplace with a flue, fake logs and no glass enclosure.

I'm open to any suggestions. I need heat and lots of it!

A gas fireplace is for effect only (unless it's a really huge one). In some cases with a set of gas logs and no glass screen, you can actually loose heat by sucking out the house heat up the chimney.

What kind of heating system do you have for the house now? More of that is what you need, not a gas log fireplace.

I have forced air furnace. Would installing a glass screen make a difference?

I have a feeling I may need to remove the flue and install a direct vent FP.

Would I also need to install "pipe within a pipe" exhaust up the chimney?

Glass would make a lot of difference. While it would block any heat from the fire from directly heating the house as you have found there is not that much heat. So putting in a glass would keep the heat in the house from escaping up the chimney. Plus, there would be some radiant heat from the glass.

If you install a glass front, then you need to make sure that there is a source of outside air. If this is a fireplace insert then there probably is one already. You'll just need to make sure that it's operating.

You should already have a lined two-part pipe for the flue.

It's a brick lined fireplace with a flue, there's no piping just a brick chimney.

I had a set of gas logs in the last house that put out some heat into the room. It was considered a ventless model but we kept the flue partially open. In our current home we have a gas fireplace that will heat the room up quite nicely, it is a sealed unit with an outside air intake and exhaust. It also has a blower motor.

Sounds like you have direct vent. It looks like my options are a glass cover or a direct vent insert.

Anyone know how flues are attached to a chimney? I ask because I'll have to remove it if I install a chimney pipe.

clay flue is stacked up with either friction fit betwee joints or a little refractory mortar, and the chimney is built around the flue.

otherwise known as: it ain't coming out, son.

your typical installation of a modern gas fireplace insert (and the fake logs should be replaced by a UL rated insert) includes feeding down a Type II innie-outie fire-rated duct. hot gas goes up the inside pipe, cold feed air to oxygenate the flame comes down the outer duct that surrounds it, much of the heat is insulated from the surroundings which reduces clearances needed for safety, and you don't hoover out all the warm air in the room turning on the fireplace.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
