We have a small entry into the house (tri-level) and a limited budget due to all the remodeling/maintenance projects. With a newly tiled entryway, laminate at both the upper and main level and someday tile at the bottom level, I've decided to replace the mdf treads with pine treads that I have on hand and paint them. Do I need a special paint or is a good quality paint and several coats of poly good enough. I'll probably add runners at some point but I would like it to look nice and crisp until that happens so durability is key.
If you want it to hold up longer then skip the painting and just use the poly. If you use the Min-Wax water based poly for floors you can do 7 coats in two day because it drys so fast.

Great thanks! Oh wow, 7 coats in a couple days. I'll try that but I'm going to have to paint and then poly. I couldn't get the trial run of stain mixes on the pine floor to blend well with the laminate.
I guess you've figure out that you always try it on the back sides of the treads first. Now trying to get paint to stick to a tread with oil based stain on it is going to have to now be primed with oil based primer. I would then use enamal paint and apply all of it with a foam roller.
