i am installing formica countertops (used) for an 11 ft. workspace in my basement. i want to re-formcia the countertop with new formica. what is the best way to "rough up" the existing formica before application of the new formica? sandpaper w/belt sander or skilsaw with blade set @ 1/16th of an inch? thanx.

using a belt sander would be best. The glue (contact cement ) used for formica only requires a thin film on both surfaces. You only need to get rid of the slick surface to get a toot for the glue to hold. If you use the saw, you will reduce the contact area and lessen the glues holding power

A belt sander will make low spots real quick. Use a random obital sand making sure to hold it flat and 40 or 60 grit sand paper, vacuum off , wipe down with mineral spirits then glue.
