Does anyone know (in the 1970's)if the mfg of these kits were required to list asbestos as an additive?

Also, do you know where I can get an asbestos test kit?

I did a quick check on the EPA website (http://www.epa.gov) but didn't find anything specific to your inquiry. Given that this was so long ago, I think contacting the EPA would be your quickest option to find out if warnings were required in the 1970's.

Although I haven't tried to get an asbestos testing kit, I think the big box hardware stores might have them; if not, you could also ask the EPA if you call or do an online search for asbestos testing kits.

One caveat: if you ever plan to sell your house, I believe, but am not sure, that you may have to make a disclosure that the house has asbestos (if the test is positive) (similar to the requirement for disclosure of lead).

Is your concern that asbestos might become or is airborne now, or that you want to remove the popcorn ceiling and want to do it safely.

You're wise to address this issue before doing anything; I've heard of people who (remodel) their houses and just tear in without checking for environmental hazards.

My house was built in 1969. In our area, some of the houses were removed for a freeway. They did asbestos abatement on them.
I asked the crew where the asbestos was in the house and to what levels. They told me the insulation was the only issue and it was way below levels requiring abatement but because it was a government run job, they were abating anyway. I specifically asked and they said the popcorn has no asbestos in it and popcorn, if it has any at all, has a below the limits amount.

That said, keep it wet, wear a mask and roll it up tightly in plastic when done.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I will ever sell the house but I would like to know for sure. I'm just curious.
