I am building a wooden fireplace surround to enclose a natural gas fireplace. I want to surround the primiter on 3 sides of the glass opening with cultured marble...Question "What type of adhesive would I use that would withstand the heating and cooling of the unit". Thanks...
thinset mortar, a portland cement and lime mix. put cement board on or use expanded metal stucco mesh, screw it on, and apply a coat of mortar over it. before it dries, scratch horizontal lines on it with the toothed edge of the trowel, this is called a scratch coat. now you can butter up your marble tiles in back with an even coat of mortar, and press them in place.
be sure you have good insulation board that is fire resistant between that heater and the wood, ask your local inspector what they require in your area. there are national building codes, but local codes can vary (read that as "requiring extra steps or materials" in many cases.)
sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
