I saw on one of the DIY shows "bathroom renovations" named "guest bathroom" with Amy Matthews, they installed a pre-fabricated mosaic tiled wall right on top of the existing shower tiles. Does anyone know where I can get this information in order to purchase? I tried looking this information up and can't find it online. I have two bathrooms to do and this would make life so much easier. Or does anyone have any suggestions how to DIY this myself and make the tiled walls? Would I use regular water resistant drywall and place the tiles on this along with the grout? If so, what kind of mortor would I use to bind the new tiled drywall to the existing tile? Any suggestions would be great, I am new to the whole DIY concept since this is my first house.
You can purchase the prefabricated shower wall panels at most of your larger home or building centers. Just find an employee there and tell them what you are searching for and they can help you find it.
There isn't any way at all that you can pre-fabricate your own tile panels to install in your tub area. If you want to replace the existing tiles with something different, you have to demolish it, remove it completely and replace it with something new. Unfortunately, you can't put new over old.
The old tile has to be removed along with the wallboard that it is attached to. A moisture barrier and cement backer board have to be installed before you can attach tiles using thinset mortar.
