Nice looking (but cheap?) interior wooden door has two small holes 1/2 inch diameter made by the knob from the door stops.

I don't want perfect, but some fix? How to patch, plug these holes? How to fill them prior to painting without the filler just falling into the hole?

spray some low expansion foam ("great-stuff" from h.depot or lowes )into the hole. when it is set , scrape some out so you can make a flush patch with wood putty or fiberglass putty

If you don't have expanding foam (I don't have any around, for example), then I would just using a piece of pop cycle stick or stiff cardboard to enclose part of/most of the hole. Stick it inside with a piece of string knotted around or through and taped to the center of it. Use hot glue or any fast setting glue to get it to stick to the inside of the door hole edge? (Similar to how one can repair drywall holes)

When stuck good/cured I would just use a good wood putty to begin to layer it in, making sure to stick it well to the sides of the hole (without pushing the backer piece in). It may need a couple applications, the last one a bit proud of the surface and then when all is dry, sand it flat.

And move the doorstop. If you make the patch and the doorstop stays where it is, then the holes will get re-punched out quickly.

All great ideas, thanks a lot. Thanks, I will buy better, different, door stops, or somehow revisit that issue.

        Excellent point!
I like the hinge mounted door stops, as long as you have some door trim/casing molding to bump against.
