Help have floor falling in on old house we are going to fix up..foundation is pillar and block....2 areas areas are falling one edge in living room and the other a bedroom, any ideas.The bedroom has fallen 6 inches and is sagging/soft in the middle, we are in the middle of purchasing,and dont want to tear this down, the roof is good other rooms good....the whole house is covered in rat poo....floor to floor room to room, it is a 2 story house, with additional kitchen added on.....This message has been edited. also the bedroom that is sagging is along the outside corner wall and the wall inside is moldy...
Since you are 'in the middle of purchasing' it may be time to step back a bit. I would find a local contractor or engineer and have them look the house over. Find someone who will be able to quote you some ballpark prices for various repairs.
As to what's going on: Old house frequently are very poorly constructed - especially the foundations. Often there are no footers, foundations are dry stacked stone and beams & joists are trees. Even if dressed lumber is used, it is often undersized and spaced too far apart. The result is a house that sags in many different directions.
This kind of damage is almost impossible to repair without replacing major structural parts of the house. "Almost impossible" translates into "very expensive". Get some estimates as to what you are in for before you commit to buy.
