On Cool Tools within the last week, I saw a project idea to convert unsued attic space over the garage into storage. They made an opening in the garage ceiling and installed a stairway. Then they put large panels over the trusses in the attic. These just screwed right into the trusses. They were strong enough to stand on and this space could be used for extra storage. Where can I find these panels and the instructions on this project?
right here!! you don't need special panels, it depends on what you plan to store, just box's of x-mas stuff and old clothes, wrapping paper 1/2 inch plywood but if your gonna try to walk around, store heavy furniture. and stuff like that 3/4 plywood pick out where you want, the fold up stairs.and cut a hole in the sheet rock.stick your head up there and measure the distance from 1 joist to the other. that wouldbe the width of the stairs you want to look for at the hardware store. do that and install as per manufactures instrustions. next would be to buy the plywood and install it.you might have to cut the ply to get it up in the attic. watch out for any elec.wires running over the joists if there are you will have to block up the ply. is this enough to get started?
Frodo is correct, this is an easy project. We installed a pull down ladder, and I have to say, it was slick how it went in. We used 5/8 plywood to settle the spousal argument about how thick.
The panels they showed are expensive and a wast of money. I priced them and they were crazy expensive. Just use plywood. MOnica
i agree in theory, with you joe. but this is done all the time. if the home owner dosen't try to use it like a spare bedroom, or a garage. but a place to put wrapping paper and x-mas lights, and such as that. i think its ok . hell, i did it to mine.but under the correct conditions it is dangeriousReply
I make a lot of money undoing some of the silly things shown on those tv shows and done by home owners, I guess I should be quiet and just let it go so someone else in a different part of the country can make some to. lol And yes your right it is done all the time, but in a garage with no center wall for support there's a very good chance of trouble down the road.
