I must admit that I am some sort of junkie watching these shows. My husband starts to get really nervous if I have been watching over 2 hours fo DIY shows in a day.
Ok-what do I have? Sandstone. And lots of it. 2 things that I could not get away from in homes that we looked at were paneling and sandstone. The stone is aroudn my fireplace, stairs and foyer. I tried scrubbing it with an acid-didn't work. I would love to bring my pressure washer and clean it-well obviously that presents it's own set of problems, so I thought that I could cover it up. The top of the sandstone is dirty and worn. I hate it! It dates the house something terrible.
So what can I do???
Thanks so much for reading and responding!

you obviously live in a river area where there is sandstone a plenty to be had. and wall penelling is just awful unless it is virgin real wood at least an inch thick.
sandstone is not real durable, as you may have found while trying to scrub. it's also as porous as a beach for some reason.
I would remove it or veneer with something nicer. you would need to secure a gridwork to the sandstone solid enough to hold a scratch coat of cement mortar (so called because you scratch horizontal grooves in it to hold the next layer of stuff) and coat with another stone or tile.
