I tried searching for answers to this, but no luck.
I've been gone from my house for about six weeks. I returned and found that my disposal won't work. I tried the reset switch. I've loosened the grinder parts by hand so I know they spin. Is there anything else I should try before paying for help? The switch works, I just get an electrical humming sound and nothing happens at the unit. There was some grit around the edges at the bottom of the inside so I loosened that. What else should I try? Thanks
Barb
PS It also drains slowly, which was never a problem before. Last night when I got home I dumped the ice from my fridge's icemaker in the sink so I could make fresh ice. Otherwise I haven't used it.

If the motor is making a humming sound when the switch is turned on, then there is power getting to the unit. The most likely cause is either the motor is defective or jammed. With a Switch in the OFF position use the disposer wrench on the bottom of the unit to turn the disposer manually. Spin it at least five or six times in each direction and make sure that it is spinning easily. Remove the wrench, run water into it, and turn on the switch. If it still doesn't work you're probably going to have to replace the disposer.
