Our sink leaked onto the wood under the sink and now this area is depressed. The damage goes up the side about 2 inches as well. See pictures below.
Looking for advice on how to repair.
Do you have water damage on the floor below the cabinet base? You might want to check from the basement to see if the water soaked through the kitchen floor to the floorboards.
This is on the main floor of a townhouse so no basement. I believe there is just concrete underneath.
Doesn't look too bad so the fix is fairly easy. The main thing is to make sure that the leak is fixed and that everything had dried out.(It actually looks pretty dry in the pics). Rather than rebuild the entire cabinet, the simple fix is to get a piece of finish grade plywood and cut it to fit the bottom profile of the cabinet. 1/4" to 1/2" birch will work fine with the thickness depending on how warped the existing bottom is. You will have to cut the new piece into two parts so that you can fit it through the door openings. Install with a few screws or nails and caulk around the edge and you're done.
Yes, it is dry now. Should we be concerned about mold? We were thinking we should take out the bottom and replace it vs. just putting something on top of it...?
Mold is the only real issue. I would cut out all but about 1" to 2" around the perimeter of the existing cabinet bottom - about as close as you can get to the sides with a jig saw. Then make sure the under cabinet space is clean and mold free. Then install the new bottom piece as above.
