Folks,

Have a 32" X 8' solid wood door [4 hinges]. The seal on the bottom of the door is starting to come off on the door-knob-side.

The seal seems pretty thick, unlike the ones at the country house doors. I wanted to know if there is a particular brand of high-quality and any installation tips? By high-quality, I mean something that will last longer, more durable and appropropriate for a door of this size-weight. I am sure upon purchase, there is an installation guide, but looking for anything you guys have learned over the yrs that helps to make a better install that the instructions might not include.

There are 4 doors like this at my house, so I believe this will not be the last time I do this. The door are exceptionally heavy and 3 of the doors are semi-spring loaded to self-close. this one to the back yard is not.

I would search out the door manufacturer to track down whatever seal they use. Beyond that, the most important thing is to adjust the height of the threshold. All door sweeps will eventually rear out, but they will last years longer if the threshold is set level to the door and at the correct height so that the door seal contacts just enough to seal yet not bind.

Look in your yellow pages phone directory under:

Weatherstripping

and the places listed there should have either an exact replacement or something that will work.

If you have this kind of weatherstripping on your door, then the weatherstripping or the door (or both) were sold locally and lots of homes and buildings in your area will have the same kinda weather stripping.

By now, the weatherstripping companies know whether it's still avaliable, or what can be used to replace it if it's not.

Take a picture of the problem with you.

Thank you for your responses...

We finally had some rain after 3-4 wks and it is real hot and humid [95 and 80% humidity]. It is tough to take any decent pictures until I can take off the door.

I have never changed a door-sweep but this one requires both glue and nails from what I have seen that is coming off the door...I agree the threshold has to be sett properly to make sure the sweep is either not too tight or there is too much of a gap for excessive air exchange.

Use screws instead of nails if feasible.
