Has anyone caught this Canadian import from a couple of years ago? It is following Bryan and his lovely wife as they build their new dream home. Bryan is a professional contractor. It is currently running on DIY.

It has some of the drama that any couple goes through as they build their dream home but it isn't over the top or annoying like folks on LIOLI and House Hunters.

If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.

My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Saw one yesterday. Both Bryan and the wife are likeable and yes the drama is kept to a minimum. And that I like. The show does present timely information as well, not the here is what the crew did with this space. Explaining code issues is always a hoot.
I did stumble when Bryan mentioned he "wanted" a 200 amp service. The size of the house dictates service requirements most often. I also wonder how the not legal mast had to be removed and the service trenched in. In these parts that would have had to be OK'ed when the plans were presented to the code officer. But that is a minor quibble. Will watch it again when I can. Wink

I thought that was odd as well. The guy is a professional builder and clearly his plans were approved by the local codes office before he started construction.

Did you catch the episode yet with his plaster coffered ceiling? The crew did a beautiful job on it. I have this show set to record on the DVR, its worthy.

Yes the ceiling was an interesting do, as I often wondered how you lay that out. Never did one, may not either. Who knows. Big Grin

I thought "House of Bryan" was new, and they're rerunning the "DIY Disaster" programs from the late 2000s as a teaser for it. good shows, good info, decent snark level Wink

in any event, the music was not recorded on cassette and mixed in a dumpster, like on DIY Disaster.

        sws,
I think it is new to DIY, but I believe he built the house in 2009.

According to Lowe's Canada website they only arrived in Canada in 2007, clearly this show is getting some major help from them as this is where they go to buy many items for the house. Not a bad thing, it is one way TV happens through advertising.

at this point, new DIY shows all seem to be using Lowe's as the in-kind materials supplier, replacing HD.

it probably has something to do with the past year plus of stories on stock market sites like MarketWatch that Lowe's is not performing at the level they want to, and changing their retail focus. you see more of the hungry critter at dusk, as they try harder.

Big blue is 2 miles from my house, big orange is 8 miles, guess which one gets the majority of my home improvement dollars? Big blue has a store right across the street from big orange on the other side of town, but I avoid that area whenever possible.

Curious how except for color differences walking inside the big box stores are amazing alike journey. In this area a blue store is about 16 miles away. I'm sure you can guess what is across the small valley holding the stores. Which is sad because back in the day it was prime farmland with great rabbit hunting. Progress.

The layouts are very similar but the blue store near my house is a bit smaller than the other blue one so the layout is slightly different. Big orange and big blue's layouts that are across the street from each other are pretty similar but at times I find myself going to where it something is in the closest store only to be way off in the bigger stores. Orange has a smaller store in Apex and the tool corral is located in the middle of the store not in the front where the other stores have it.

Supermarkets all have a very similar layout, sometimes they may be flipped but produce is almost always down one side, with meat at the back and dairy on the opposite side of produce. The cans and boxes o'stuff are all in the middle aisles.

And drug stores, what you go to them for is smack in the back making you walk past everything else to get to the prescription counter. It is all about separating you from as much of your money as possible.

didn't get to it last night, but hit IMDB this morning. we are watching 2010 episodes, this apparently picked up right where DIY Disaster left off in that year. to come in a year or two, I expect, is his mini-mansion build on the lake, which is currently running on HGTV Canada according to the show website.
