If you get an electronic die cut machine you are limited to paper media only (with the exception of a few other thin materials like film). With the BigShot or the BigKick, you will be able to cut the wide variety of materials - paper, leather, chipboard, rubber, magnet, thin metal, and more - that you can with the regular Sizzix.
I own both a Sizzix and a BigShot and have never regretted not buying an electronic die cutter. I like to work with texture and a variety of materials and these machines allow me to do that. My actual reason for buying the BigShot was the width of the feed. I have always made my own greeting cards and with the BigShot/BigKick machine I can feed a standard size greeting card through for cutting windows and more.

It sounds like I'm selling the cricut, and that is not the case - just letting you know my experience.
I cut a lot of different media with my cricut - paper to heavy card stock, etc. I know that the expression has the ability to cut the same thing several times and am told it will cut some of the chip board but have not tried that yet. I think it is supposed to cut fabric also.

Dear computer challenged friend, I am probably worse that any one on the computer because beside being challenged also have Post Tramatic Shock from a car accident and can't remember anything and lose things I write down. I found the Cricut and Expression wonderfully easy and use it all the time. Look on AC Moore on line, I got mine for a great price because had 4 cartridges with it plus colored crayons for it. Those 4 cartridges alone where worth what I paid for the whole thing plus with those cartridges you would not need any others for a long time.Sugamom

Broke down and bought the Big Shot...got a good deal on QVC. LOVE IT! My main problem with the electronic machines is that you have to teach yourself. Wouldn't it be nice if the stores had knowledgeable personnel or taught classes on some of the new gadgets??? My local LSS went out of business a few months ago so just have Hobby Lobby and Michael's. Oh no...need to go "console" my Cuttlebug!!
