Leveling floors for laminate install
My friends house has a hjge dip in the living room. When we looked in the crawls space, we discovered that the builder had put the joists in with the crown going the wrong way. The result is an 1 1/4 inch difference in level. She is wanting to install laminate floor, but we need to address this beford we can do so. Discussion has been had about using shims and plywood to bring the low area level with the rest of the floor, or do we use self leveling concrete? Any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks Smile

a Holmes episode was repeated this week in which one joist was miscrowned. the issue was fixed by sistering another onto it with the crown up. a whole lot easier than fooling with a boatload of shims and an 8 or 10 foot level (which can be faked if you get a really lovely straight piece of wood and tape a 3 or 4 foot level onto it.)

but shims work, too. depends on whether you have access to the whole joist.

sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
