My house was built in 1943 and when it was built they put in gorgeous hardwood floors. These floors are in need of some tlc but after investigation, they layed the boards right on the beams and didnt do a subfloor. It it ok to still just refinish them or what would be the best thing to do on a low budget? The floor is very squeaky and has been stained but the stain is not even so I was hoping to remove enough to remove or atleast fix the stain and then poly it like 6 times if I have to but if anyone has any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks
Since the floor has been in place for over 70 years you can't argue the fact that it will hold up without a subfloor. If may make some noise and may bounce a little but it's going to stay there. As long as it hasn't been sanded to death already, you should be able to sand, stain and finish it.
One strong bit of advice though - Hire this out to a flooring company. You're looking at about $3 per SF to sand and finish - maybe a little more to stain. This number could be a little more or less depending on the going rate in your area. By the time you rent the right equipment you will spend close to that amount of money - not to mention your time. Plus, the rental equipment is not as good as the stuff the pros use. So for similar money and no time you'll get a much better finished product.
Is there a way to make them stop creeking and squealing without pulling them up?
Maybe this will help.?
