        I was helping install a wooden floor this past weekend and the question came up as to why they include so many short boards in each box of flooring when it seems that we would have liked more longer boards. Anyone know why there are so many short boards in boxes of flooring?

        they include the short boards so that you do not have a continuous line of splices in the floor. this avoids having a floor looking like a tic-tac-toe game layout. By giving you the short boards, they relieve you of having to make so many cuts. lay your flooring out so you dont have a joint in line with the previous one

        The cut out all the knots in the wood and this allows them to utilize as much of the clear wood as possible. To get all longer lengths the cost per square foot would go up as there would be much more waste.

        The man about never said all trees had to be tall. Paraphrasing an outside salesman that I worked with years ago. Basically he was saying all parts of the tree must be used. Just a fact in the business word.
        Boxed flooring may have more shorts in one box, less in another. Those instructions may tell you to open more than one box at a time to mix variations in color, but really they want you get to finish line of a project not holding all short pieces of material.
