I removed old vinyl tile from a room in our very old house. Under the tile is a beautiful reddish colored hardwood, but it is covered with a black paper type substance and black adhesive used to keep the tile in place. What can I use to remove the paper and the adhesive without ruining the floor? This is only my second attempt at DIY concerning flooring and I need help!! Thank you

This post also dealt with black tar paper:

you are probably well advised to have a floor sanding and refinish. if you get endless monkeys with endless scrapers and use endless quantities of mineral spirits to soften the tar, you can probably get it off, but there will be surface damage likely to the finish from removal.
probably has old varnish on it that has yellowed and softened, which is why I would do the full refinish option right off the bat.
sig: if this is a new economy, how come they still want my old-fashioned money?
