        I need help to figure out how or where to start to make it look like a nice back yard

        I'd start with mowing the lawn, or using a weed whacker on the high grassy portions. Then you can assess what it's like underneath. Looks like there's a small tree of heaven in the left side of the photo, and if so, it's a junk tree that you'll want to remove before it gets too big. It's also called a peanut butter tree because the leaves have that fragrance.

        Beyond that, it's hard to make any suggestions without seeing the rest of the yard.

        There's a lot of deep shade at the fence; you could put a shade garden in that area if you're so inclined.

        As to the BBQ you mentioned in one of the the other 2 similar posts, that again would depend on the configuration of the yard, whether you have a patio, deck, etc. More photos would help.
