where to begin?
My daughter and son-in-law purchased a home, in CT, with a huge backyard. The yard is mostly flat and empty. Does anyone have a 3 to 5 year plan for large spaces like this. They realize they cant do everything at once, but want what they do to look right until the next part/ stage happens. must haves shed- big enough for riding mower, fire pit or outdoor kitchen, raised beds ,pet area, and deck. They have done a wonderful job on the inside of their home and now would like to be able to enjoy the outside. thank you

Stage the "must-haves" in order of importance, budget and labor and start that way. A lot will depend on the labor and budget factors, especially if they're contracting out some of the work such as the fire pit or outdoor kitchen.

What do they absolutely have to have this year? If that project is the only one that's affordable, then that's the beginning of the long-term plan.

The lawn mower shed, for example, could be done quickly to house the mower if they're doing all the base creation and shed installation themselves.

In terms of a pet area, what size is the pet(s)? What do they want? A simple run, an outdoor pet house? A play area for the pet(s)?

Raised beds are fairly easy to do, so that might be something they can start with just to get some color and interest in the yard while working on the bigger projects.
It's helpful to add small projects in to evidence progress since the larger and longer projects won't be finished that quickly.

Again, the 3 factors mentioned above will really drive creation of the plan. And this assumes that the yard itself doesn't need any work in terms of sodding or amendments.
