My husband and I are trying to figure out what to do about our sloping backyard because we have a steep slope on the left side of our yard which makes it very difficult to mow. We would like to create a walkway through a sloping flower garden. I suggested to my husband that we lay out large steps but he thinks we may need a way to retain each step. Anyone have any suggestions? Please help.
I have no expertise in step construction of stairways on steep slopes, but I do think your husband is right. If there's no support and retention for the stairs, what will hold them in place?
A flower garden flanking the stairway would work, depending on the type of flowers you plant. A rock garden would also work, especially if you use rocks strategically to act as deterrents to slope runoff.
Another option is terracing, depending on how much and how long the slope is.
My site of choice for garden projects is Fine Gardening, which does have some information on creating steps.
