Hi lsaalfeld, I don't think I'd use rocks or gravel as it might be difficult to weed once weed seeds blow in. Not much will grow in total shade, but ivy is definately NOT a good idea. It will get into your foundation and under any siding you have. Dwarf mondo grass comes to mind. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
