Going to install white subway tile for the back splash. Its the subway tile on the mesh backing meauring 12x12. Measurements are 18" tall from counter to bottom of cabinets. It seems to me that it would be easier if the tile sheets measured 18x18. If I'm not mistaken the 18" height seems for the most part, standard. Seeing as they do not now I have adjustments to make. Do I surround the tile with some sort of a border?

With varying countertop thicknesses and the possibility of there being a partial backsplash made out of countertop material, there is no one measurement that can dictate the size of material.

However; Take a look at the 12" x 12" square of tiles. Without seeing it, I would bet that there are 4 rows of tile. (subway tile is typically 3" x 6"). That means that all you need to do is cut one sheet in half. The mat is easily cut with a razor knife. This will give you six vertical rows of tile to fill your 18" space.

Install a full sheet and then a line of half sheets above it. Simple?
