Please give me some advice if you would. We are going to stain the kitchen cabinets which Im not even sure what type of wood I have (and worried about if its laminates on the sides they are the stock kitchen cabinets that came when we bought the house). IS minwax stains the better way to go, or should I hit like Sherwin WIlliams or other type of paint store for on of their stains and latex based or regular stain? Thanks

To be honest, I've never had a problem with any stain I've used. Interior wood stain is about the simplest product you can buy in a paint store. It's nothing more than a dye dissolved in either mineral spirits or alcohol (or water in the case of a latex stain). So, I don't believe you'd get any better quality or higher technology going with one company over another.

What you should do is pick the stain based on the colour you like best. Take some Q-tips and (if you can find out) a piece of the kind of wood you have to several different paint stores and ask them to try any of the stains you're interested in using with those Q-tips. The tiny amount of stain used to wet the Q-tip head won't be missed by anyone.

So, buy the colour you like, not the name on the can.

In order to stain any cabinet, all the sealer and old finish has to come off first.
That's why they call it stain it has to have bare wood to be able to have the stain soak in.
Post a picture of your cabinets.
If there oak then your going to be dealing with all the deep grain in the that type wood. If you try and get all those lines off your going to sand down below thin venner and the cabinet will be trashed.
You can plan on at least a week to strip and finish one simple set of cabinets.
A simpler faster way to do it is to replace the doors and just venner the face frames.
