I just saw another episode of Kitchen Crashers today absolutely DESTROY perfectly good solid wood cabinets with sledgehammers -- not to mention the windows, sinks, and many other items that should be recycled or re-used.

It's totally irresponsible. If the show was to take the minimal additional time to remove the items properly, most items could go into another home or be recycled for producing new items rather than rotting away in a landfill.

SHAME ON YOU DIY and HGTV! So many of your shows are guilty of this behavior. You're teaching your viewers VERY unethical rehab tactics!

What you're saying is perfectly reasonable from your perspective. But, you're just not taking into account that a spectacle creates public interest, and that in turn increases viewership. That's a good thing for the DIY Network because it makes their time slot more valuable to rent advertising time in, and it's that increase in revenue from advertising that keeps the show from being cut... (and being replaced with Origami Today with Dave Nelson, for example) even if all of those new viewers are MAD AS HE11 at DIY Network for smashing perfectly good stuff someone else could use.

Now you also know why professional wrestlers act so crazy all the time. No one would watch those shows if they knew all the wrestlers change in the same locker rooms without incident before and after the shows. Ditto for Jerry Springer and his Circus.

just took some stuff to our local ReUse Center, which benefits Habitat for Humanity.

there was more crud in the dumpster than there was in the receiving room.

nobody wants 50s cabinets with dirt an inch thick, chipped sinks, grody drain parts, leaky faucets.

there were some nice cut ends off granite slabs, however, and they took some interesting vintage lamps and a nice bathroom sink. I got a half-full 500 foot spool of 5000 volt test lead wire there a year back, some old hardware store closed or cleared out the cruft. four bucks.

don't overlook a stroll there if you have a big project going. it means when you volunteer for a paint-a-thon, like we did a couple years back, and find there is a concrete shelf all around the house that tips into the wall instead of out, they can come up with some hydraulic cement and plastic to at least insure the water that's flowing in there will bypass the studs and flow out underneath.

it's a hack, but the house won't fall apart, and the little old lady will get to live out her days in HER house, and not be sent packing by the man who condemns unpainted and unfit homes. Scope Of Work, alas, did not permit taking the material out and re-setting the slope right, I was informed.

I just maintain that there is something to be learned from the fact that Jerry Springer and the World Wrestling Federation consistantly get higher ratings than Washington Week in Review. People want entertainment, an a spectacle happening right before your eyes is entertainment.
